Some friends were asking me about what I post on social media that’s not Facebook. It was an interesting exercise to come up with a condensed summary for each, and I’d like to share it.
I actively use Twitter, Tumblr, Livejournal, Google+ and Facebook.
Twitter is for little, offhand comments, goofy observations, bad jokes, game industry stuff, links other people post, and miscellaneous complaints. Its audience is mainly game industry professionals, LARP/gaming friends, and my mom. Can’t forget mom.
Tumblr is for content-sharing, basically a “Look at this stuff I found” site. When I find a nifty picture, site, story, or social justice rant, I post it to tumblr. Sometimes I post stuff I came up with too. Sometimes gets mildly NSFW but never explicitly. My audience is a random sprinkling of friends and some strangers. Also I have a recipe blog.
Livejournal is my most vulnerable space, where I share stuff that is not suitable for a general audience (it’s my only non-public feed). I’ve been a little slow to update it recently, but its locked nature makes it useful both for sharing my struggles with mental illness, news about my romantic life, and unpublished fiction that I don’t want to be available to the public.
Google+ and Facebook are usually for general, offhand updates, but each gets neglected for a different reason. With G+, the people who are active there are a somewhat unusual mix and it’s hard to know whom I’m writing to. With FB, it’s a VERY broad audience, including extended family and folk community contacts. I don’t want incendiary stuff going on FB because it could cause some weird clashes between people I know but am not close to.
I’d be interested to hear how others use their social media, and how the differences of each medium is useful for people who aren’t me.
